General Port Operative (GPO)‍‍‍

Full-time - Permanent (five over seven shift pattern)
Port of Southampton

We are currently seeking a number of General Port Operatives – to be based with the Agency at the port in Southampton. This is a physically demanding, manual industry where all operatives work in a safety critical environment. Health and Safety is of paramount importance. The port operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The role entails working any five over seven shift pattern and overtime will be available to allow us to meet the demands of our customers.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide an effective and efficient loading and lashing service in line with specific customer requirements and in line with Company quality processes.
  • Other duties associated with vessel loading/discharging operations and mooring.
  • Monitoring and maintain work practices with particular focus on health and safety.
  • Ensure that customer requirements are maintained on both quality and standards.

We are seeking individuals who can provide a first class, effective and efficient service to our operation ensuring that the high standards of service and performance levels are maintained and improved. This can include multi skilling and variable job roles which require individuals who have an all-round approach to work and are adaptable to change.


The main requirements for the position are:

  • Flexible approach to working arrangements and able to work the shifts stipulated, which include every Friday.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • All applicants must be over 21.
  • Full driving licence essential, with the ability to drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

All applicants will go through a selection process to be short listed for an assessment day which will consist of psychometric tests, driving assessment and interview.

Selected candidates will receive full training for the position. All employment offers are subject to a pre-placement medical.
